FAQ

This is a quick page containing information that a potential member may be interested in.

What level of skill is required to join the club?
Any level is welcome, from beginner through to blackbelt. We have a number of Sensei so training will be tailored for your needs at whatever level you're at.

Are beginners only welcome at the start of the year?
Although it would be advantageous to start with other beginners, this is not compulsory and people are welcome to start training at any point throughout the year.

What do I need to wear for training?
To begin with, any sports gear is fine. If you decide to carry on training, you'll eventually need to purchase a Gi (Karate suit and trousers). Gis come with a white belt and can be purchased from Tom Sensei if you need one for a good price (usually around £15). Speak to Tom Sensei directly about this.

Do I need to pay for training immediately?
No, come along to a few sessions to begin with if you want to test out the club. Times and locations are detailed on our club page. If you decide you wish to continue, then you can buy your membership.

I want to buy membership now, but I can't figure it out.
Under 'Quick Links' to the left, follow our 'LSU PAGE' link. On the right should be a 'join' link. If you have not already done so, there may be a link asking you to purchase AU Affiliation (AU = Athletic Union) - This is not controlled by us, but is required to join any AU club. Click on 'Shotokan Karate' link to buy membership with us. Membership is £52. Stash may also available from this page if you wish for it.

Do I need to buy stash items?
You are encouraged to buy Stash (LSU merchandise for our club) although this is not obligatory. Some garments can have your name included on them and are good to wear out at socials. However, your gi should be prioritised as we realize that the cost can start to add up as more and more items are bought.

...and where can I buy stash?
Stash is not available at all times throughout the year because of production considerations. Your club committee will keep you informed on when it is available and how to get it.

There are no places left for the club!
If this event arises, please send an email to Tom (LINK) and explain the situation - We'll speak to the AU and ask them to provide us with more spaces.

What belt colours do you use?
Our colour system is as follows:

WhiteBeginner Red9th Kyu Orange8th Kyu Yellow7th Kyu Green6th Kyu Purple5th Kyu
Purple & White4th Kyu Brown3rd Kyu Brown Tag2nd Kyu Brown & White1st Kyu BlackDan

To advance to the next belt, you must pass a grading, where you will be examined on a syllabus specific to your grade. Kyu gradings are roughly every 3 months and require a certain amount of attendance points, so by the time they come around you should be ready to advance to the next level.

I have a question that is not answered here.
If your question still isn't answered, please contact Tom on the contacts page.
